Please don’t ask me “Just do the DR drill”

If you are working on the infrastructure side, you will be asked about the DR drills on the regular basis. The request may be from the regulators or company policies, so your company needs to provide evidence that you are well prepared for when it comes to a disaster situation.

Like above, you will have a great plan, team, and drill to be performed, now sounds there is everything in place. But,

Do you know what type of DR site you have?

I’m not talking about the definition of the types of DR sites, and especially if you are using DR as a service (Cloud-based), it will be difficult to define what type of DR site you have.

In the cloud world, you can define the DR site in this way.

  • Cold site: If you are using IaC to provision your infrastructure, and you are semi-always ready for re-provisioning what your business is running for, then you could say you have a cold site. (But is it a really cold site? in the traditional definition, the cold site may just have land/buildings/facilities without even servers, network devices)
