Azure supports five different layers of security, referring to the defence-in-depth. Let’s talk about the SQL database in Azure Synapse as it includes all these layers below.

Threat protection

Synapse has built-in threat protection capabilities, such as Azure Defender. which helps you identify and remediate security threats in real-time. Azure Sentinel, a cloud-native SIEM, can also be integrated with Synapse to provide additional threat detection and response capabilities.

Network Security

Synapse allows you to create virtual networks with built-in security controls, such as network security groups, virtual private networks (VPNs), and Azure Firewall. These features help protect your network from unauthorized access, and ensure that your data is transmitted securely.

Firewalls and virtual networks

Virtual network rules are a firewall security feature that controls whether the server for your databases and elastic pools in Azure SQL Database or for your dedicated SQL pool (formerly SQL DW) databases in Azure Synapse Analytics accepts communications that are sent from particular subnets in virtual networks.
